Zürich Metropolitan Area - Twelve Agglomerations

From an economic and social point of view, the region of Zürich is probably the most important centre in Switzerland. This gives the City of Zürich with its some 380,000 inhabitants particular locational advantages, such as the international financial centre, various headquarters of international firms and internationally renowned universities.

On a regional and a cantonal level, the City of Zürich can often achieve very little by working alone, since despite city articles in the constitution and in the Tripartite Agglomeration Conference, Swiss cities still carry very little political weight. Furthermore, there are many problems and challenges nowadays, for example in terms of the economy, transport and the environment, which demand solutions which cannot be found within the limits of a city like Zürich but which require increased cooperation with the municipalities in the agglomeration. Institutionalised means of cooperation are available and new applications for them are being discussed.

Examples of some of the important tools for supra-communal cooperation are exchanges within the Zürich Metropolitan Area, participating in the CityRegion.Net project and also the consortium set up back in the 1950s within the Zürich Regional Planning and Surrounding Area (RZU) umbrella organisation.
