Automatic ticket machine

Among other purchase options, you can buy your ticket at one of our numerous automatic ticket machines. Here you will find an explanation of the easiest way to obtain your ticket at a ticket machine.


The current machine

At nearly all stops in the VBZ network, you will encounter this type of automatic ticket machine. In the following, we have provided some useful tips for buying your ticket.


How to buy your ticket

Find the destination in the list of place names (postal code)

Enter the appropriate code

Fare and validity appear in the display

Select ticket type: 1.Kl. for 1st class, <-> button for day passes (valid for 24 hours),
1/2 button for reduced fare (children from 6–16 years, holders of a Half-Fare travelcard, dogs). If you do not press any of these buttons, a full fare 2nd class single ticket will be printed

Special codes for ZVV day passes for all zones, Albis day pass, 9 o’clock day pass, class upgrade, bike tickets, etc.

The direct selection buttons

Direct selection buttons

Yellow button: short distance (see list B)

Blue button: single ticket in the city network (valid for 1 hour)

Green button: day pass in the city network (valid for 24 hours)

 

At some stops, you will find additional direct selection buttons:

Red button: ticket as per specified destination

Orange button: local network (see list B)

Are you travelling just a few stops?

Then press the yellow button for “short distance” (located in section A). In the black field B below, you will see a list of all the stations in the short distance area. Your ticket is valid within this area for the next half an hour.


Are you travelling across Zurich?

Press the blue button “Stadt Zürich” (“Zurich municipal zone” button, located in section A). With this ticket, you can make as many journeys as you wish inside the city limits. Return travel and transfers to other routes are allowed. The single ticket is valid for one hour.


Are you travelling in the city of Zurich throughout the day?

Press the green button “Tageskarte” (“day pass” button, located in section A). Your ticket is valid for 24 hours throughout the entire city network (zone 10).

The future machine

At present, the new automatic ticket machines are now in a test phase. The test machines are located at Bellevue, Albisriederplatz, Limmatplatz and Paradeplatz. As soon as this phase is completed, the new machines will be installed in a rolling launch.

Zone map

The new zone plan is easy to read and shows more details.

Paying with coins

You can continue to pay for your ticket with coins in the usual manner.

Paying by card

You will now be able to purchase tickets and travelcards with payment cards as well, e.g. with Postcard or a credit card.

The start screen

The offerings on the start screen adjust to the location of the automatic ticket machine and the time of day. For instance, you will only see the 9 o’clock day pass option during valid hours of use.

The product range of the test machines

At the new ZVV automatic ticket machines, you can purchase the same product range offered on the old machines: single tickets, day passes, zone upgrades, etc. Now you will also be able to obtain the following products as well:

  • Multiple tickets (multiple-journey tickets, multiple day passes, etc.)
  • Extension of personal monthly travelcards
  • Transferable, non-personalised monthly and annual travelcards
  • ZürichCARD 24 hours/72 hours

  • The most frequently purchased tickets are visible at first glance.
  • Along with coins, you will be able to pay with all major credit and debit cards.
  • The machine offers a shopping cart function.
  • The machine speaks German, French, Italian and English.
  • Even for people with impaired vision or in a wheelchair, the ticket machine is easy to use.

Payment options

You can pay for your ticket with coins as in the past as well as with the new option of debit and credit cards. Banknotes are not accepted. Banknote processing equipment takes up a lot of space and is susceptible to theft and vandalism.

Future product range

In the future, the automatic ticket machines will be equipped with the following functions and products:

  • Place of departure of your choice
  • Tickets for national traffic routes (e.g. Zurich–Berne)
  • Combo tickets (e.g. public transport tickets with zoo entrance)

Additional options such as topping up prepay cards for mobile phones are still being examined for possible introduction at a later point in time.
