This arborescent prickly pear cactus grows as high as 5 m and is found only on the Galapagos Islands. The tree-like growth habit may have evolved as protection from the Galapagos tortoises, which love the juicy shoots but cannot reach them because of the height of the trunk. The trunk may also offer a competitive advantage over the surrounding bush vegetation.
