The city administration is looking for good ideas. Its employees already have them.
The StadtBox is the City of Zurich's intrapreneurship programme. City employees are given the opportunity to develop their own ideas for improving the city administration and to put them into practice in a project. The programme is based on the idea that employees are very familiar with the challenges facing the city administration from their everyday work and often already have an idea for a solution.
With the StadtBox, city employees receive 70 hours of free working time, a project budget of 1000 Swiss francs and professional support from experts to develop an idea into a concrete solution within three months in a structured design-thinking process.
The StadtBox creates a space to develop smart solutions for challenges of today. Employees contribute their ideas, try out their own solutions and experiment with new working methods and ways of thinking.
Pilot project in the Department of Health and the Environment
Between September 2019 and March 2020, the Smart City team has conducted a pilot test of the StadtBox together with the Department of Health and the Environment. The experiences have been consistently positive. Over 40 ideas were submitted. From mid-November 2019, eleven employees from five service departments of the Department of Health and the Environment worked in seven teams with a StadtBox on their ideas to solve a challenge from their everyday work. The presentation of the developed projects took place in March 2020.
Based on the positive experience with the first pilot project, the Smart City team is planning a second pilot project with the StadtBox in autumn and winter 2020.
