Regional cooperation

On a regional and cantonal level, the impact of the City of Zurich on its own is minimal, since the Swiss cities still carry little political weight in spite of “city clause” in the Swiss constitution covering the municipalities and the Tripartite Agglomeration Conference. Today, many problems and challenges, such as the economy, transport, the environment, etc., demand solutions that cannot be found within the borders of a city like Zurich, but require greater cooperation with agglomeration communities.

Important instruments of this inter-communal cooperation are, for example, the exchange that takes place at the Zurich Metropolitan Conference or the amalgamation of Regional Planning for Zurich and the Surrounding Area (RZU), an umbrella association which has existed since the 1950s. The regular, partnership-based exchange with the other municipalities in the canton of Zurich also forms part of this.
