Daniele Buetti (*1955, CH) setzt sich in seinen grossformatigen Fine Art Prints mit heutigen Kommunikationsformen und deren gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen auseinander. Insbesondere thematisiert er den Umgang mit SMS und WhatsApp-Nachrichten, die unseren Kommunikationsalltag grundlegend bestimmen. Einst als technischer Fortschritt hochgelobt, machen sich nun auch die Nachteile dieser Art von Kommunikation immer stärker bemerkbar und greifen tief in die Strukturen der zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen ein. Der Umgang mit Sprache wird dabei gänzlich neu definiert. Einerseits sind es lapidare, belanglose Satz- und Wortfetzen, die binnen Sekunden zwischen Sender und Empfänger ausgetauscht werden. Andererseits werden grundlegende Themen mittels «text message» salopp abgehandelt. Für Daniele Buetti spannt sich die Bandbreite unserer alltäglichen SMS-Dialoge von der skurrilen über die ironische bis hin zur tragischen Botschaft. Diese stellt er in seinen Arbeiten in den Mittelpunkt und deckt auf humorvolle Weise auf, wie ein scheinbar harmloser Austausch für die Kommunikationspartner fatale Folgen haben kann. Dabei ist die Technik, die uns neue Interaktionswege eröffnet hat, zeitgleich auch jene, die uns mit ihren Tücken in die Irre führt. Gejagt von Zeitdruck und Schnelllebigkeit stolpert man über Autokorrektursysteme, die Missverständnisse generieren, oder verschickt gar eine Nachricht an den falschen Empfänger.

Währenddessen erlangt die sprachliche Kreativität in puncto Verknappung eine ganz neue Dimension: kurz und knackig werden Inhalte auf das Äusserste reduziert, und so besteht die Nachricht von heute aus Akronymen, Piktogrammen und Emoticons. Ein sprachliches Auskommen ohne Artikel, Subjekte oder Vokale. Ein neuer Slang entsteht, der das sprachliche Auseinanderdriften der Generationen mit sich bringt. Was darüber hinaus auf der Strecke bleibt, ist die Emotion, der direkte Kommunikationsweg wird vermieden. Daniele Buetti gelingt es, diese hochaktuellen und komplexen Kommunikationsstrukturen ebenso witzig wie reflektiert ins Künstlerische zu übersetzen und uns zum Nachdenken anzuregen. Vanessa Bersis

In his large-format fine art prints, Daniele Buetti (b. 1955, Switzerland) addresses contemporary forms of communication and their effects on society. In particular, he thematises the handling of SMS and WhatsApp messages, which fundamentally define our everyday communications. Although this kind of communication was once highly praised as technological progress, its disadvantages are now also becoming increasingly evident and are deeply encroaching on the structures of interpersonal relationships. Here, the handling of language is being completely redefined. On the one hand, this is about succinct, trivial scraps of sentences and words that are exchanged between sender and recipient in seconds. On the other hand, essential issues are dealt with sloppily via text message. For Daniele Buetti, the scope of our everyday SMS dialogues ranges from the whimsical to the ironic, through to the tragic message. He positions these at the centre of his works and humorously reveals how an ostensibly harmless exchange can have fatal consequences for the communication partners. Here, the technology that has opened up new channels of interaction for us is also what simultaneously misleads us with its pitfalls. Hounded by time pressure and the fast pace of life, we are tripped up by auto-correction systems that generate misunderstandings, or we even send messages to the wrong recipients.

Meanwhile, linguistic creativity is taking on a completely new dimension with regard to abbreviation: content is kept extremely short and to the point, so the message of today is comprised of acronyms, pictograms and emoticons. A linguistic subsistence without articles, subjects or vowels. A newly emerging slang is causing generations to drift apart from each other linguistically. Furthermore, what falls by the wayside, is emotion – the direct communication channel is avoided. Daniele Buetti manages to translate these highly contemporary and complex communication structures into art, in a manner that is as witty as it is reflective, prompting contemplation on our part.
