The city of Zurich is growing, most strongly in the north, west and south. To ensure that the people who will work and live in these development areas in the future can use public transport, the existing route network must be expanded. This includes the construction of a four-kilometre tram line, which is to connect the Affoltern district with the city centre with no need to change trains from the end of 2029. At the same time, VBZ is already planning an expansion of the public transport network beginning in 2040, which is intended to better serve the region with a public transport ring system.
On this page you will find information on the network development strategy 2040 to 2050, the "Affoltern tram" expansion project, and also annual service adjustments when the timetable changes.
