Local supply in the city of Zurich - Comparison 1998 and 2008

Supplying the population of Zurich with services and goods for daily/short-term needs.

A functioning local supply is important for sustainable settlement and neighbourhood development. This report presents the provision of services and goods for daily/short-term needs to the population of the city of Zurich. It is based on a purely quantitative GIS analysis with clearly defined threshold values. In addition, there are numerous other shopping opportunities and offers, which are not presented here.

The analysis shows the high supply density of local supply in the city of Zurich. Around one fifth of the population finds a Level I local supply centre (everyday care) within less than 300m on foot from their place of residence. A level II local supply centre with a wider basic service can be reached by almost two thirds of the population either in a maximum of 800 m on foot or in 10 minutes travel time (public transport time including walking distance to the stop). Compared to 1998, the supply as a whole has even increased somewhat.
