Networking meeting with migrant organisations

The Integration Promotion of the City of Zurich invites representatives of migrant organisations in Zurich and religious communities to a networking event in the Stadthaus every year. At these meetings, information on integration policy is conveyed and contacts are made. The ABR organises and implements the networking meeting together with the promotion of integration.

Zurich Migration Conference

Every year, a delegation from the ABR takes part in the renowned Zurich Migration Conference at the invitation of the Mayor. The conference takes place every autumn, is attended by up to 200 participants and offers a platform for discussing current migration policy issues. For the ABR, in addition to the content contributions of national and international experts, the exchange with experts as well as with the foreign population is also important.

Meeting with the city council

The annual working meeting with the city council is an integral part of the work of the ABR. It is prepared by the ABR and the city administration and usually takes place in November. Thanks to the direct exchange, the ABR can inform the city council comprehensively about its concerns and the concerns of the foreign population and set thematic priorities.

Loans Integration Projects

The ABR is represented by two people in the municipal commission for integration loans . The loans support projects that are planned and implemented by people from different backgrounds or that are aimed at a heterogeneous target group. As foreign persons, the ABR members can contribute their own view of the project proposals to the commission.

Integration policy objectives

The ABR supports the City of Zurich in formulating and pursuing its integration policy goals. It is important to the Advisory Board that the perspectives of the various foreign groups living in Zurich are also represented in the objectives. The integration policy goals 2019–2022 are based on the strategic goals of the city council and follow the guiding principle "Zurich is diversity in action".

Round Table racism

At the "Round Table on Racism", the Zurich City Police meets regularly with involved actors from the administration and civil society. The meetings are based on the Zurich Action Plan against Racism, which the city has followed since joining UNESCO's European Coalition of Cities against Racism. The city of Zurich joined in 2007 on the recommendation of the ABR. To this day, the ABR is committed to the action plan and takes a seat at the Round Table on Racism.

Political participation

In the city of Zurich, around a third of the adult population is excluded from voting and elections, because the Canton of Zurich, unlike some other cantons, does not have the right to vote and vote for foreigners. From the point of view of the ABR, there has therefore been a democratic deficit for a long time. In 2017, the advisory board proposed to the city council a "consultative right to vote and vote", which was supported by some municipal councillors in 2018. Unfortunately, the city council replied that there was no legal basis for this. Since then, however, the city council has taken a positive view of the core concern of promoting the political participation of foreigners and submitted an official initiative to the cantonal council in September 2019. It demands that the Canton of Zurich allow the City of Zurich to introduce municipal voting and suffrage for foreigners. By decision in January 2020, the cantonal council supports the authorities' initiative. Now it will continue on its way through the political authorities and will ultimately be decided by the electorate of the Canton of Zurich.

Vocational Training Forum Zurich

With Anita Platzer, the ABR has a seat on the board of the Vocational Training Forum Zurich. The Forum advocates dual vocational education and training in the city of Zurich and promotes cooperation between companies, schools and other institutions. It ensures – primarily through events – a good networking of the various actors in vocational education and training.
