Münsterhof

A bustling town square

The Münsterhof with its baroque facades is a real jewel of Zurich's city centre. Since 2016, it no longer serves as a parking lot, but as an open space with a welcoming atmosphere. The redesign was emphatically restrained and underlines the historically grown geometry and old town atmosphere. It is paved with Guberstein throughout, whereby the square blends harmoniously into the paved areas of the surrounding old town. A fountain was installed, whose larger basin made of artificial stone has a diameter of six meters and is waist-high. A water inlet with drinking water leads into the smaller basin. Both basins are supplied by a four-metre-high, arch-shaped bronze inlet.

Usage concept for Kulturplatz Münsterhof

On the basis of the "Kulturplatz Consensus Paper" developed in a participatory procedure, the city council adopted a usage concept for the Münsterhof in 2015. The Münsterhof has been positioned as a cultural venue since 2016, with four to five annual or biennial events in the fields of dance, theatre, art and music as well as a Christmas market that complies with the guidelines defined in 2014. The previous big events such as the Sechseläuten, the New Year's Eve run, the Fasnacht, the Züri-Fäscht, the medieval spectaculum, the youth music festival and the brass music festival will continue to be approved.

In September 2019, the existing usage concept was adapted. Based on the experience of the first three years of use in 2016, 2017 and 2018, the list of events that can be approved on a regular basis has been adapted to practice. No more events are defined than before, but their duration and form are aligned with the developments that have taken place since the opening of the Münsterhof.
