Milan Urban Food Policy Pact

In 2015, the World Expo 2015 took place in Milan under the motto "Feeding the Planet, Energy for life". The mayor of Milan at the time, Giuliano Pisapia, suggested in advance the signing of an agreement aimed at more sustainable, fairer and healthier food production. The pact, signed by over a hundred cities as part of Expo 2015, is considered one of the most important legacies of the World Exhibition.

By signing this agreement, Zurich is committed to a sustainable food system. The urban population reaffirmed this will with their approval of the new municipal code article on the promotion of sustainable nutrition in 2017. Based on this, the City of Zurich adopted the "Sustainable Nutrition Strategy" in 2019, which is currently being implemented. Zurich raises awareness of the impact of nutrition on the environment and climate with specific projects, offers and initiatives. The city's commitment to sustainability ranges from cultivation to food disposal by reducing losses, strengthening a balanced diet and giving preference to sustainable products. By pursuing these goals, the municipal catering establishments are taking on a role model role.
