Zilla Leutenegger (*1968, CH) ist für ihre Videoinstallationen, Skulpturen und Zeichnungen, vor allem aber für die Kombination all dieser Medien bekannt. Insbesondere der «bewegte Strich im Raum» bildet einen Schwerpunkt im Gesamtwerk der Künstlerin. Leutenegger entwickelt Werke von bemerkenswerter Leichtigkeit, die poetische Momentaufnahmen unaufgeregter Alltagssituationen zeigen, in denen sie häufig selbst präsent ist – sei es durch eine ihr stark ähnelnde Figur oder durch den Buchstaben Z als Emblem. Z, die Initiale ihres Vornamens Zilla, ist ihr Alter Ego.

Im Vordergrund der Arbeit ZZZ, die sie eigens für AAA 2015 konzipiert hat, steht genau dieses Z. Eine Z-förmige Skulptur in farbigem LED-Licht. Ganz so, als habe sie Pause, als warte sie auf ihren Einsatz, ist die Skulptur in nächster Nachbarschaft zu ihrem finalen Bestimmungsort platziert: Dem Haken am Lastseil eines Baukrans in Zürich-Altstetten, einem Quartier, dessen Strassenbild von eben solchen Baukränen geprägt ist.  Zweifelsohne spielt diese Arbeit auf Leuteneggers Installation Moondiver (2014) an, bestehend aus einer Wandzeichnung in Form eines Kranes, der einen farbigen Mond und, in gewissen Abständen, ein Z als Videoprojektion visuell verschiebt. Die Erscheinung des Mondes erinnert an jene Momente, in denen der Mond gerade aufsteigt und seine Struktur noch deutlich zu erkennen ist. Er erscheint uns dann sehr viel grösser und klarer, als wenn er höher am Himmel steht und leuchtet. Bei Zilla Leutenegger wird mit den Kränen keine neue Stadtlandschaft gebaut, sondern sie bringt, mit dem letzten Buchstaben des Alphabets, einen Hauch Poesie in das urbane Ensemble.

Das Z in ihren Arbeiten ist ein Exempel, eine Figur, ein Zeichen, das vielfältige individuelle Assoziationen weckt. Obwohl das Zeichen auf die Künstlerin selbst verweist, ist es breit einsetzbar und interpretierbar. In Altstetten/Albisrieden etwa kann es ebenso für Zürich wie für Zilla oder Zollfreilager stehen. Zilla Leutenegger (b. 1968, Switzerland) is known for her video installations, sculptures and drawings, but primarily for combining all of these media. In particular, the “moving line in space” constitutes a key aspect of this artist’s oeuvre. Leutenegger develops works of remarkable lightness that show poetic snapshots of calm everyday situations, in which she is often present herself – be it via a figure that closely resembles her, or via the letter Z as an emblem. Z, the initial of her first name Zilla, is her alter ego.

This very same Z comes to the fore in the work ZZZ, which she conceived specially for AAA 2015. A Z-shaped sculpture in coloured LED light. Just as if it were taking a break, waiting to be called upon, the sculpture is positioned in the immediate vicinity of its final destination: the hook on a construction crane’s load rope in Altstetten, a Zurich neighbourhood where the streetscape is characterised by such construction cranes. Without a doubt, this work alludes to Leutenegger’s 2014 installation Moondiver, consisting of a wall drawing in the form of a crane, which visually shifts a coloured moon and, at certain intervals, a Z as a video projection. The moon’s appearance is reminiscent of the moment when the moon is just rising and its structure can still be seen clearly. At that moment, it appears much larger and clearer to us than when it shines from a higher position in the sky.

Zilla Leutenegger’s cranes do not build any new cityscape; instead, with the last letter of the alphabet, she brings a hint of poetry into the urban ensemble. The Z in her works is an example, a figure, a sign, which conjures up manifold individual associations. Although this symbol refers to the artist herself, it also has a wide range of possible uses and interpretations. In Altstetten /Albisrieden, for instance, it can represent not only Zilla, but also Zurich, or the “Zollfreilager” (duty-free depot) where this work is located. Isabel Hanstein
